Floods may have killed 2,000 on Hispaniola

Heavy rains and subsequent flooding over the past week have caused one of the worst-ever catastrophes on the island of Hispaniola, claiming more than 1,200 lives in Haiti and more than 400 in the neighbouring Dominican Republic - with some sources putting the toll above 2,000. Worst hit were areas in the southeast of Haiti, on both sides of the de la Selle massif: about 1,000 of the known fatalities were in and around Mapou, which lies south of the massif (and where up to the time of writing some towns, like Nan Galet and Boulou, remained inaccessible).
